von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics

The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics is an international education and research center that is at the leading edge of fluid dynamics in aeronautics and aerospace, turbomachinery and propulsion, as well as environmental and industrial processes. The Institute offers post-graduate education in fluid dynamics (Research Master in Fluid Dynamics (Master-after-master level), Doctoral Programme, Short Training Programme and lecture series) and encourages "training in research through research".

The methodology developed at VKI combines simulation on dedicated software including in house developed flow codes and modules and experimental validation on scale models in world-unique test facilities.

VKI's unique expertise and scientific infrastructure, more than 50 facilities and test rigs, are aimed at studying and solving complex fluid dynamics problems. In addition to further developing the VKI's unique traditional skills and expertise in hypersonic fluid dynamics, the Institute is focusing on several strategic research areas in the coming years, primarily:

  • The study and design, of a new generation of very quiet and efficient, low or zero CO2 aircraft engines, including those powered by hydrogen;

  • Anticipating the growth of commercial space travel, designing small satellites that can return to Earth;

  • The deep and accelerated transition to CO2-neutral energy production, through research activities into hydrogen and wind energy production;

  • Extensive decarbonization of the chemical industry, partly by applying the knowledge of turbomachinery acquired over decades;

  • The study of liquid metals for complex industrial applications

VKI is an ESA reference laboratory and has signed a Space Act Agreement with NASA to strengthen a long-term collaboration between the two organizations. Demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing space safety and sustainability, VKI is part of the zero debris community.
